Care & Maintenance

Proper care and maintenance of a Pilates Reformer is essential to keep it safe, smooth, and long-lasting. Regular maintenance also ensures clients get consistent resistance and alignment during Pilates exercises. Below is a practical guide used in studios and home setups. 🧘♀️

1. Daily Cleaning (After Each Use)

Keeping the reformer clean prevents sweat damage and bacteria buildup.

What to do:

  • Wipe the carriage, shoulder rests, footbar, and headrest with a mild disinfectant.

  • Use a soft cloth or microfiber towel.

  • Avoid harsh chemicals that can damage vinyl or wood finishes.

Tip: Use a cleaner designed for gym equipment or diluted soap and water.

2. Weekly Inspection

Check moving parts to ensure smooth operation.

Inspect:

  • Springs – Look for stretching, rust, or loss of tension.

  • Ropes and straps – Check for fraying.

  • Carriage wheels – Ensure they roll smoothly on the tracks.

  • Footbar mechanism – Confirm it locks securely.

If any component looks worn, replace it immediately to prevent accidents.

3. Lubrication of Moving Parts

Some reformers need occasional lubrication.

  • Apply light silicone lubricant to wheel bearings or tracks (only if recommended by the manufacturer).

  • Do not over-lubricate, as it can attract dust.

Always follow the instructions from brands such as:

  • Balanced Body

  • Merrithew

  • Peak Pilates

Each brand has slightly different maintenance recommendations.

4. Monthly Deep Maintenance

Once a month perform a more thorough check.

Tasks:

  • Tighten bolts, screws, and frame connections.

  • Clean under the carriage where dust accumulates.

  • Inspect pulley systems for smooth rotation.

  • Vacuum around the rails and tracks.

5. Spring Care

Springs are one of the most important components.

  • Rotate springs periodically so they wear evenly.

  • Replace them every 18–24 months in busy studios (or sooner if used heavily).

  • Never leave springs stretched when the reformer is not in use.

6. Upholstery Protection

To keep padding and vinyl in good condition:

  • Avoid oil-based lotions before use.

  • Use reformer covers or towels during sessions.

  • Keep the equipment away from direct sunlight to prevent cracking.

7. Storage and Environment

Proper environment extends the lifespan.

  • Store in a dry, temperature-stable room.

  • Avoid humidity that can affect wood frames and metal parts.

  • Keep reformers away from walls to allow airflow and cleaning.
